The estate was established in 1997 by Graeme Avery, who had made his fortune in the publishing industry. Sileni has 106 hectares (262 acres) of vineyards in the Hawke's Bay, planted to several varieties including Pinot Gris, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and unusually for the region, Pinot Noir. Sileni also source fruit from Marlborough, particularly Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling.
Hawke's Bay is one of New Zealand's warmest wine regions, averaging about 2,245 hours of sunlight a year. With over 25 different soil types, grapes of the same variety can taste vastly different depending on where they are grown. As a result, Sileni can produce several different wines from the same variety. There are several still and sparkling examples of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and a range of wines made from both Pinot Noir and Syrah. Sileni also makes a collection of wines called 'Nano', which are single-serving bottles with a clip-on glass.
The winery is named for the character Silenus in Greek mythology, who would appear with Dionysus, the god of wine.
