2012 La Montessa

Spain has a lot to be proud of, again, with their wines. Alvaro Palacios, the virtuoso of ‘The New Spain’, has received various accolades and high reviews about their selection of red vintages.

In the March 2016 issue of Decanter UK, their La Montesa 2012 is included as one of top 50 reds up for purchase. In this article by award-winning writer and Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine, Sarah Jane Evans, it describes how this specific Rioja stood out for her. “A modern approach with a brilliant redcurrant crunch and a savoury undertone of oak. It stands apart in my 25 picks with its generous (80%) dominance of Garnacha. Spot the tell-tale orange fruit and Mediterranean character.”

La Montesa 2012 should be drink between 2016 – 2020 and has 14% alcohol.

Another review by Sarah Jane Evans (‘Alvaro Palacios 2015 Vintage Preview’) also in the same magazine, highlights one of the wines with the highest point in the 2015 vintage wines presented by Alvaro Palacios – the 2015 L’Ermita. “Alvaro Palacios L’Ermita 2015 has a dense dark purple core with pinkish edge in colour. Generous brambly aromas. The palate arrives silky and smooth with bright acidity and dancing freshness. Strikingly cool and elegant, with a very fine texture. Superb finish, full of promise for a terrific future ahead of it.” The 96-point wine was produced with only 2,400 bottles.

Renowned British wine critic Tim Atkins whose expertise on Riojan wine is always on point, shares in his interview with reporter Alberto Gil in La Rioja (December 2015) the ‘controversial’ classification of select wineries. In his interview, Atkins explained he links authenticity and calibre of red wines to the location of the vineyard. In his list of winners, Palacios Remondo bagged the ‘Stand-out red of the year’ award with its Quiñon de Valmira to be launched this 2016.

Lastly, their 2009 Priorat Finca Dofi was recognised by Vivino Wine Style Awards as the top wine in the category of 2016 Spanish Priorat Red.
